MELANIE ELAINE STRYDER
I’m still alive, but I’m barely breathing
just pray to a god that I don’t believe in
I got time, while she got freedom

REAL NAME: Sam

ANYTHING ELSE: Not that I can think of.
NAME: Melanie Stryder - Mel
AGE: 22
GENDER: Female
SEXUALITY:Heterosexual
DATE OF BIRTH: July 21st

MARKINGS?:An insertion / de-insertion scar, the usual scrapes from the cave-dwellers life style, calluses on her hands and feet
GENERAL ANATOMY: Tall and strong, especially in her legs, with a light tan from the Arizona sun. Mel has a round chin, long eyelashes, and thin ached eyebrows.
GENERAL ATTIRE: Whatever is available—generally jeans with frayed edges and tank-tops, sometimes sweats and T-shirts are thrown into the mix.
PERSONALITY: Melanie feel comfortable speaking her mind, and is at home with sarcasm. When she finds that there is someone who she really, truly dislikes, she will use every possible opportunity to annoy them, if nothing else.
In addition, Mel is the kind of person to hit first and ask questions later when faced with danger. She doesn't overly love violence, but she has no reservations about using against anyone who is threatening her, her family, or her friends. Mel is a realist and often skeptical. If it seems to good to be true, it probably isn’t. She hates to feel like she has no control over what happens or to not know things. When it comes to her very close friends she is incredibly loyal and caring—sometimes becoming self-sacrificing—and will protect them no matter what it means for her. Because she hates to feel in debt, Mel will be sure to pay everyone back.
LIKES: Jamie, Jared, and Wanda, her little family, as well as French fries, freedom, running, and the adrenaline from raids
DISLIKES: Seekers, the general idea of the soul invasion, Kyle, open spaces, making soap, and being told what to do.
STRENGTHS: Running, soccer, raids, understanding Wanda, physical strength, remembering places and faces and, strangely enough, making bread
WEAKNESSES: Sometimes overly independent, judgmental, being polite to people she doesn’t like, accepting charity, and letting go
DREAMS: Stopping the invasion / finding a way for humans and “good” souls to live together
HOBBIES/INTERESTS: Playing soccer, going on raids
BACKGROUND: \
Melanie had a fairly uneventful childhood until, at around fourteen, she realized something was going on. Her realization was helped along by her uncle Jeb, from when he carved lines on the back of a book. At that time, Mel dismissed it, but things seemed to come together when Mel’s father, controlled by a soul, came for her and her brother, Jamie. The two sibling just made it away.
For three years Mel and Jamie ran, hid, and raided to stay alive, convinced after a while that they were the last humans alive. The was proved wrong when, alone on a raid, Melanie met Jared. After a rocky first meeting—both were convinced the other was a soul—Mel finally realized Jared was indeed human and he ended up joining Mel and Jamie. Mel and Jared swiftly fell in love.
A while later, Melanie saw Sharon, her cousin, on TV. She thought, going by Sharon’s uneasiness in the crowd, that Sharon was still human and felt that she had to go find her. She went by herself after a painful departure from Jamie and Jared.
In Chicago, Melanie was caught by the Seekers. They tracked her down and chased her. Melanie left a quick note for Jared and jumper down an elevator shaft. However, she failed to kill herself and ended up with Wanda in control of her body. Unlike other hosts, though, Mel did not disappear.
Eventually, Mel and Wanda bond more and more and follow the lines to Jeb’s caves. The two are held captive for a while, as everyone assumes Mel is gone. Slowly the humans realize Mel is not all gone, and Wanda is not all bad. Mel breaks Wanda’s control a few times, but usually stays contained, once even disappearing.
When the humans bring back Wanda's Seeker, Wanda decides to give the body backto Melanie and die her final death. Mel protests, but is unable to stop her. Jared, on the other hand, keeps Wanda alive and Mel Jared and Jamie find her a new body.
Now Melanie has her body and her family back, along with a new, very welcome, addition. After a while, the other humans have gotten used to Melanie being Melanie.
ROLEPLAY SAMPLE:
Jessica Smith-Simon didn’t even blink at horror movies. She loved dark mysterious nights, had a slightly morbid interest in everything that most people wouldn’t go near, and liked to think she was fearless. High school, however, she wasn’t so sure about. Between girls who had no life and boys who had vocabularies of just over one hundred words, Jessica had never really liked the concept of a school—or, rather, asylum—where hormonal teenagers who didn’t want to be there and grumpy adults who really didn’t want to be there were locked up together. Yet, somehow, she had survived the experience for the better part of three years. This particular day couldn’t really that much worse, right?
Right?
Sadly, Jessica’s mind had a nasty habit of never glossing over the facts of life, even when she wished it would.
The thing was the night before she had been watching a really interesting show on people who claimed to see ghosts, didn’t realize the time, then had to stay up late (technically early) doing homework. Combined with her usual sleep deprivation, Jessica was feeling especially terrible. However, she would never just lay in bed unless she had broken both her legs, both her arms, and was on mind-numbing pain meds. A day spent doing nothing was a day wasted. Maybe she could browse the web on her laptop during first period. And second…And third…And maybe fifth. Not fourth, though, that teacher was strict.
She gripped her bag tightly and walked down the hallway greeting those she recognized. Opening her locker, Jessica reluctantly began what she knew was doomed to be a terrible day. Here she was, stuck in a madhouse of teen angst so she could “earn a brighter future”. One thing was for sure: any future would be brighter than these four years of tort—high school.
Right?
